This was back when I was trying to be transgressive. I was in phony atheist mode. The song’s just about relationships. I had lived with only one woman up until then: Magie Song. When one lives with a strong-willed person, one’s “back’s to the plaster” nearly every day. Our apartment in Palms (a section of west L.A.) had holes in every door the day we moved out. I had to repair an entire two-by-three-foot hole in the hallway with new drywall where I had pressed my feet against the wall in anger so forcefully that it had buckled.
