Bad Day for Iconoclasts

House Approves Flag Burning Amendment

Ever since the Taliban destroyed those Buddhist icons, we’ve known there has been something archetypal brewing between Islam and the West concerning the treatment of icons. When the World Trade Center was destroyed, they struck at an icon more than anything else. Even the number of lives, though great, was less important than the iconic value. Now, with the flag- burning amendment, it appears that we are headed for an opposite polar reaction to the iconoclasts of Islam. We’re now in danger of becoming just as rigid as they. Long-term prognostication: Looks like we may be headed for a tragic enantiodromia.
